Gear change return spring
Hi All, my gear lever went all floppy and I had trouble selecting gears.
I suspected a broken spring on the right hand side of the engine so took the clutch off (I didn't take the whole right hand side casing off, just the clutch and its cover).
This revealed that the spring had jumped off its locater so wasn't working - I put it back on as I couldn't see anything wrong and the gears seemed to be selecting perfectly.
I went out on it today and the same thing has happened - has anyone else experienced this and what was the cause please?
Thanks in advance
Andy

I would post a pic of it. Is the plastic collar still there. Sounds like something not quit right

A picture would be helpful.
Have you had the bike a while or did you just get it?
Have you done any work on it recently where you took the cover off?

There's a goofy little step washer there that has to be in the right orientation to keep everything lined up. Perhaps it is backwards or missing? Pics are going to be needed.

Cheers guys, had the bike since 1997 but the engine was recently rebuilt again. I'll have to take the side off and report back.

Re: Gear change return spring
The spring is on backwards. I just had this issue on an '89 I purchased recently. The previous owner had rebuilt the motor and done the same thing. One of the ends of the spring has a dogleg bend in it and if the spring is in backwards, it will work for a bit and then slip off. You will need to pop off the inner clutch cover/casing, slide the spring off, flip it over, and put it all back together. At least you don't need to order any parts!

It has taken me months to get round to doing it but you were absolutely right, the spring was on the wrong way round.
Many thanks for helping me!
Cheers
