KDX250 to KLX250S Hybrid

Post by snopro753 »

I just purchased a 1993 KDX250 with a locked up crank for $150. I have a line on a 2010 KLX250S frame very reasonable. Why would I want to do this instead of KX frame?

Because Iowa is the hardest state in the nation to get a title and registration for a dual sport. If the frame doesn't have a sticker saying "this bike meets all federal highway standards..." and a VIN in their database matching a 50 state legal frame, no joy. Iowa DOT has withheld citizens car registration renewals forcing people to give back old plates that slipped by earlier. It's nuts.

So to stick it to the man, I plan to find a completely legal frame and put an awesome 2 stroke trail bike motor in it. Hence the KDX250!

I have done a little research and I have figured out that the swingarm bolt for a KDX250 is the exact same bolt for a KLX300. KLX300 frame is similar to a KLX250S frame I think. The bolts are different between a KLX300 and KLX250S but from my research the KLX250S and KLX300 are just a progression of the 1994-1996 KLX250.

I am considering buying the KLX250S frame and mock up the KDX250 empty cases while I have a new connecting rod installed on the KDX250 motor. That should give me the best idea if this can be done and how much welding will be required to motor mounts, etc.

I have thought about getting around the Iowa title/registration everyway I can think of and this seems like the better course of action. It will be registerable no problem, insurance will be easy, and I will have a plated 2 stroke dual sport in Iowa!

Any thoughts about this idea are welcome, good or bad. Here is a pick of the KDX250 when I picked it up. The motor is aleady out.

KDX250 to KLX250S Hybrid

I'm Sgt. Stadanko with the Iowa Department of Transportation. I have advised all of our offices and affiliates to be on the lookout for you, this motorcycle and this highly illegal activity. We will catch you. We will prosecute you. You WILL go to jail.

I'm so lucky to be in Idaho. I plan to street plate the KDX220 next week. Will let you know how it goes.

I like your project. Let me know if I can help. No helpful advise other than, from what I hear, these transplants are rarely easy so hats off to you for trying. I have an '06 KLX250s and an '03 KDX220. My riding friend has a KLX300 (unsure of year, my guess is in the 2000s). The KLX250 shares a lot in common with the KLX300. I could make some comparative measurements, photos, etc.

Ride on!
2003 KDX 220. RB Carb & Head Mods. Desert pipe. She's a runner!
2006 KLX 250 w/351 big bore. A well-sorted dual sporter.
2006 KLR 650. Mostly stock.
2014 Suzuki DL1000.

Cool idea.

I wish I could find a blown KDX250 for $150!

Check the swingar, bearings and sleeves on each bike to see if the bearing sizes match p and probably then, the bolt size will be the same.
Thank you for participating on kdxrider.net. :bravo:

KDX250 to KLX250S Hybrid

Very cool idea! Looking forward to this thread if you go for it. I can tell you that in 09 the klx did have some changes. Not sure exactly what but 09 was the last design change to 2014. If you need and measurements LMK. Glad to help. I have a 2014 250s.

They are very close to each other. If fact I plated my KDX 220 and have bought KLX parts to make it legal. very little mods to make them fit.

If you have the time anything is possible. I say go for it! Good Luck! :supz:
