2006 YZ250F SSS Forks - Need KX Length

Post by kenpowell »

I'm new to the forum but I have been wrenching / riding since 1970. I'm building a 2003 KX125 / KDX200 hybrid and I'm using 2004 YZ250 triple clamps, a 2006 YZ250f stem, and 2006 YZ250F SSS forks with 2003 KX brakes and front wheel. Everything is bolted up properly but I have no idea of the correct fork length since I do not have the KX forks. Can someone provide me with the length from the center of the axle to the bottom of the lower triple clamps? If I have this length I can shorten the forks to the correct lenght; heck, maybe I'll get lucky and no changes will be necessary! Note that I need the length for a 2003, 2004 or 2005 KX125.

Check the travel spec for the different forks on both bikes...they're all KYB and if the travel is similar, the overall length should be about the same too. The stock length 04 yamaha forks I use in one of my KDX's did not need shortening by just using pro-taper clamp adapters to get the clearance. Same with the 02 and 03 yamaha forks in my other KDX's. In a KX chassis, the forks should work fine I would think, without any shortening or bar risers at all. Why, I'd bet your month's wages on it!

Thank you for replying with such great info. My '03 YZ265WR also uses '08 YZ250F SSS forks; the original '03 forks and the '08 forks were the same length. I agree, since you are using the earlier YZ forks then my '06 forks should be the correct length on the '03 KX125. How far do you have the YZ forks slid up into the clamps?

Just over an inch or so to get the correct geometry - but that's in a KDX where the original forks were about that much shorter. Even my old '87 KDX using the 04 YZ forks are only slid up slightly more than an inch.

I'm getting close... Still need to install the chain, finish the wiring, and find the correct throttle cable to go with the new PWK35AS (with the regular PWK throttle cable adjuster). Pictures are here: http://s34.photobucket.com/user/ken-pow ... ent&page=1

The bike is now finished - 2003 KX125 with 1996 KDX200 engine. It weighs 221 lbs with all fluids but no gas. The bike is woods ready - bark busters, skid plate, rear rotor guard, rad guards, heavy duty tubes front and rear & new tires. Update - I am now riding the bike and the handling/steering is perfect with no bad habits. The axle lug offset must be the same between the '06 YZ forks that I am using and the original KX forks (which I don't have). Feels very much like my YZ265WR bike - of course it feels much lighter even though there is only about 12 lbs difference. I am really impressed at how well the bike holds a line and how precise you can be when choosing a line. It feels a little down on power but that is only because I am used to a YZ265WR and a '12 KTM 300 XC. I have to many motorcycles and something has to go - but it won't be this little beauty.
