Re: Bit by the Hybrid Bug
SPC reminded me of one advantage of the older model: your KDX 18-inch rear wheel will bolt right up using the kx spacers.
The later kx went with a larger axle and you would need to swap hubs.
It depends if that is important to you.
I run a trials tire in the summer since it doesn't rain here for months and I it's pretty rocky where I ride.
I don't think you can find a trials tire in a 19-inch.

19" trials tire made by Vee Rubber. About $80.00

I run a trials also and laced up an 18 inch excel on mine. Is the Vee Rubber a good tire?

I have seen several 19" trials tires. They must be catching on finally.

I stand corrected on the 19-inch trials tire.
Good to know.
But if you want a selection and a better woods setup, 18-inch is the way to go.

Re: Bit by the Hybrid Bug
I guess I may be missing the obvious....but why not gear it down with sprocket selection. I understand if your running a trials tire, which I would absolutely try if I were riding rocky terrain, but for here not so much. I'm sure there are mathematic equations to figure it out, but my simple mind says gear it down and get the same result. May be a bit of trial and error though.
By the way, can't get the guy with the '04 to answer my calls, e-mails, etc. etc. Great, so he wants to sell something, but does not list a price, post a picture, return a phone call, respond to a text, or answer an e-mail. Gotta luv C-list.

it's not so much about a gearing issue but more about getting less pinch flats with 18 vs 19 wheel (taller side wall on 18), that's the common argument anyway.
Besides, the overall diameter of a 18 wheel with tire is about the same as a 19 as far as I know.

+1
I don't think a 19" trials tire would work as well as a 18" due to having less sidewall to flex and wrap around things. I could be wrong. Also with a 19" it seems like the rim would take a bit more of a beating than with an 18".
But back to the KDX wheel also fitting the KX, besides being an 18" vs 19" it is good to have a spare wheel around for different tires. I have a trials tire, knobby, and ice tire all mounted and ready to go so depending on what I'm going to be riding on all I have to do is swap wheels and not deal with changing tires.
