Post by slidinleft »

Just joined the sight because I'm building an 04 ktm 125 with a Kawi 200 motor.I'm not smart enough to add pictures yet.

I know its sounds like sacrilage orange and green together.

A ktm 200 motor will bolt right in and be easier.

I like the KTM 200 motor, but I still prefer the KDX 200 power delivery. KDX 200 in a KTM chassis sounds delicious.

Not sure what he's planning on putting in, but I'm interested to find out. If it were me I'd be looking for an H series KDX 200 motor. As a benefit, I have heard that the KTM200 pipe works well for the KDX engine. Never tried it myself, but some guys used it on hybrid builds back in the day to simplify fitment.

Why not?
I've been on an '08 KTM200 for about a year now. I will confess it is my main ride; the hybrid has been re-assigned to trail maintenance work.
I took the hybrid out the other day and was reminded what a nice motor it has. The KDX motor is less "refined" than the KTM motor. Way more low end bark than the KTM, same mid, less on top but who cares.

The other really nice thing about the KDX motor are the gear ratios. When I first got the KTM I thought it was stupid that I'd get to 6th and it felt like I was going about 35 mph. I dropped two teeth in the back and it is still geared too low. The KDX tranny has a much nicer gear ratio spread, in my opinion.

Karl, you have just summed up my feelings regarding the KTM vs KDX 200 power plants. The KTM is a fun engine for sure, with that very 125ish top end. But it wears me out much quicker than my KDX.

Yeah, if I ever blow up the KTM motor and still have the hybrid, I know exactly what I'm going to do.....

Ktm 125 motor great power for a buck 25 but no low end.

KTm 200 motor 2 expensive for me. To buy or rebuild.

Complete 92 kdx 200 motor with cdi box for $275 .

Sold my 125 motor for $600

DX motor just about drops in frame.

Things I'm needing is a 95 and up DX pipe for mock up???

Might be worth looking around for a H motor if for nothing else then parts availability and reliability. I think there is one in the parts and bikes section for sale with other stuff.

Only problem with e motor is power valves. Once they are set up right and kept up I've never had a problem.
H series would be nice but I already have an e motor.

I would look into fitment of the KTM 200 pipe. Should bolt right onto your frame with less work than the KDX 200 pipe. Like I said, no personal experience, but I know some people used the KTM pipe on KDX/KX hybrids and reported that it worked well.
