1996 kx125?

Post by Julien D »

So, I may have the opportunity to pick up a free 1996 kx125 roller. Chassis and plastics all there, motor missing some bits.

Worth it for a hybrid? Maybe? Could be fun just to do the build. I have a yz250 to ride during the kdx downtime...

Wonder what parts I would need that will be hard to find? The chassis is complete. I figured on replacing bearings and such at most. Hard to say no to free.

I would personally take the free bike and then part it out or sell it as is and use that money towards a newer KX.

I don't remember seeing anyone using a bike that old, so you might be in for some surprises. In the end I'm not sure it would be worth the effort.

And once you ream the KDX cases, you can't easily get it back in the KDX. So then if you aren't happy with the '96 for whatever reason, you are going to be looking at finding another bike to put the modified KDX engine into.

I have a set of roached cases and cylinder for the KDX which is what I planned on using to do the mockup. Once that is in there and I can verify that everything will go, I would make the changes to the good engine.

Older bikes don't scare me, I'm not sure the benefit of spending $800 - $1000 on a newer KX roller would be worth it for my purposes.

Of course, parting it out is still an option. That would be decided after I see the condition of this basket case....

Just thinking out loud :partyman:

I can tell you that '96 forks work pretty damn good IMO. That is what I used on my '90.

Possibly :).

Will find out more about the deal tonight. The bike is about 2 hours away, guy is interested in trading for a tablet PC I have which I have 0 dollars in. I get all kinds of goodies when they get retired from the hospital. We'll see....

i have a 96 kx250 an finding parts is not hard at all, ebay has tons for these bikes.only down side to these bikes are the brakes but that can be fixed with swaping out the master cylinders.everything that matters for a roller is still avalible OEM or aftermarket, some part for the motor are discontinued but that wont matter for you.almost everything will interchange from 94-98.these bikes handle well, have decent suspension, fly straight when leaving the ground.i say trade it,build it,an run the piss out of it. :supz: size wise these bikes feel alittle bigger than others but there great bikes though.

Well, the kid wants to make the trade so I'll go pick it up this weekend. Once I get it home we'll see what we see. Most likely will go with the hybrid, if not I can always part it out and make a couple bucks.

Yeppers. My motor is damn near perfect. Of course, the rest of my bike is damn near perfect too. Almost a shame to pull the motor out of it....

Go for it. ANY kx perimeter framed kdx is better then any kdx frame, perimeter or not. Shed all the stock kdx fat. The kdx perimeter frames are a joke, way too wide and overweight.

Right. My kdx has no perimeter frame ;).

That's the one downside to yanking the motor. Tearing down a sharp E bike. There aren't all that many nice E bikes left around as compared to the H series. Kinda sad.
