Just Could Not Find SSS and I have Before.

Post by 80elkster »

Guys, help me out here. I went riding a couple weekends ago and lost the SSS. I had it right around 2 9/16 turns out previously but all I got was hesitation and dying on the slightest inclines. I adjusted up and down in 1/16 turn inc but eventually just went back down to about 1 1/2 turns out after many attempts to find the SSS. Temperature was much cooler in the high 30s low 40s, Gas was aged and mixed with fresh other than that no change in conditions. Hadn't riden in roughly 3 months. I'm thinking I need to pull the carb and clean it along with the air cleaner which looks clean. Any suggestions what to check? How bout this winter riding would I need to lean out the needle? I've never had problems with older gas that was mixed with mobile 1.

The SSS will change with temps just like the original position. But if you couldn't find it, I would say you probably need to clean the carb.

OK...about to sound dumb.

I've got a RB carb and head. I've always just ran the jets/air mixture that came with it. Should I be doing something??

Thanks....

The Second Sweet Spot or air screw setting is roughly 2 5/8 +/- turns out from all the way in. It is kinda tough to find because you can go right past it unless you are making micro (1/16th) turns. When you have found the SSS the bike will have a much different power delivery i.e. you can lug up hills in 3rd gear and have to try real hard just to get the motor to die. It is mind blowing and doesn't make sense. Try searching this forum and read away. :lol:

It's there. Guarandamteed. ...and finding it can be frustrating, but well worth it.

elk: Not saying that old gas is a known factor. Not to me, anyway. Still, it could be.

Just keep after it next time. You know it's there..you know about where it is..you'll get it.

Re: 'How bout this winter riding would I need to lean out the needle?'

Wrong direction. Colder temps=more 'air'=more fuel.

Jetting does have an effect on where the SSS is. If you're lean on the pilot or main, the SSS will be farther out than if you are closer to gnats on either of 'em.

Anecdotal (and therefore largely BS) input: Running a 38/148/DEK-4, my SS was over 3 turns out. A change to 40/150 got it back to just over 2 1/2.

I've made this mistake before...'remembered' the AS to be 'X'..and adjusted from there. Say, I know it's 2.5 out, so another 1/8 is 2.5 plus the 1/8. Except...I was NOT at 2.5 to start with.

It's always a good idea to start the process with an initial known set-point. Regardless of what you think you know for absolute sure..SEAT the thing, back it off to your desired starting point.

Don't assume your rememmery from a few months back is right.

Update;
I pulled the carb and was surprised to find it had slimey little green snot floaties inside that I'm sure were keeping me from finding the SSS. I did take it out on a short ride this weekend and did not have time to fuss with the air screw. Wife was along for the ride (she was riding one of my quads) and we had a late start and being impatient and blah blah blah. But I must say that the bike did run better than last time out. I'll be making a point of finding the SSS next time out :lol:
