One thing that has to come with a modded carb and head is rejetting.
I had a stock motor in my hybrid while getting all the details worked out. It ran fine.
I had a modded head and carb on my KDX. It ran GREAT. Better engine performance than the hybrid.
When I moved the head and carb from the KDX to the hybrid I had to do a "jetting loop" on both bikes. I ended up at 140 mj/40 pilot on the stock motor and 150/38 on the hybrid.
Before I swappped parts around, the KDX with the head and modded carb worked best at 150/40.
Go figure....

Re: 'What does a Talon hub do that warrants them over any other hub?'
Thanks for asking!!

Thanks for asking!!
From the website:
Our hubs are CNC machined from high grade T6106 aluminum. The strength of this metal is hugely superior to cast metal hubs generally found on OEM motorcycle hubs. The tensile, abratic and geriatric characteristics of our base metal translates to much improved handling due to the practical elimination of stretch, torsion, and extruded anomalies commonly found in stock hubs. You will be amazed at the improved handling of your bike when our hubs are laced to high quality (Excel or DID suggested) rims.

I can't find talon hubs for the KDX at that website.
The lack of abratic characteristics in my stock hubs is really starting to be troublesome.
Or have I fallen for one of CC's April Fools things?
Anyway, I went to Lowes and got some SS Grade 8 pinch bolts for my triple trees. Handling is much improved.
Seriously, though, the head and carb modification combined with carefull tuning will result in better performance everywhere in the RPM range. Yes, mine will chug up a hill or across a stack of fallen logs and then snap up right nicely.

Are you suggesting I made that all up??
Well!! I never!!!
Abratic? Geriatric? What the .... is THAT supposed to mean?
I extruded my anomaly once..but a quick trip to the chiroqwackter fixed me right up!
Fact is....it didn't occur to me that it was April 1 at the time....
