torque ring

Post by crazybrit »

Well I've still not been out on the bike since I got the RB carb in Feb. Too much lounging around in Europe. Been busily making a pipe protector for my new FMF rev/desert pipe, almost done on that, I so love polyester resin, not .....

Anyways, just need to bolt stuff back on and install the new 607 reeds.

Question: I bought a torque ring from Fredette for my 220R. I can't see why this would be incompatible with the RB carb change but thought I'd ask.

All I need now is a oversized bar mount kit/steering stabilizer setup and a KX front end. Man, I should have so got a pre-farkled KDX or just gone for a 200EXC ;-)

The torque ring won't be incompatible with the RB mods but its going to counter act a little bit of the rev profile pipe.

:hmm: prefarkled?

I think this has been covered before...but...does the torque ring space the headpipe out enough to expose an o-ring? In which case I for sure wouldn't want to mess with it.

Otherwise..I just wouldn't (minus the 'for sure' part) want to.

Still, the answer to your question has been had already. 'No,' basically.

It's just a spacer... pretty sure one could make something up. supposed to shift the powerband down a few hundred rpm's. Carvr makes an interesting point - would the o-ring be exposed.

That torque ring is a gimmick... save your money and buy some nice grips or a pair of moisture wicking socks..

I'm not sure it is a gimmick - don't have one - don't know of anyone personnally that has one - But to shift the point where a pipe becomes effective an increase in header in header length is effective in theory. Same goes for raising the rpm where the pipe becomes effective - shorten the header length. KTMs and possibly others have used different exhaust flanges to perform the same task for a number of years. I believe ProCircuit used to make a similar header pipe extender for the 97-99 and possibly later CR 250s to give them more low-end.

It does something however it is so minor that if your riding needs a hit point a few hundred RPM's lower then maybe you should change your gearing. It is not worth a bad sealing pipe.... kinda negates the purpose doesn't it?

Had one my 220 with a torque pipe as well. I could not tell the difference in riding. However, the pipe was harder to mount to the bike due to the relocation. No o-rings are exposed with this mod. I recommend just making one out of some stock material. Heck, get a stock pipe and cut a slice off that. You could make a couple of rings and sell them both when you realize that it wasn't worth the effort to the next sap out there on e-bay. With the profits, buy something nice, like an air screw from Mr. Black.

Yeah...and send it to me...cuz I don't have a extry!

A 200exc isn't any good. You have to modify the seat to be able to SIT on the thing. That bike being 'race ready' and all...it CANNOT be modified, so good thing you stuck with the green bomber!

I have the Torque Ring & have no problem with the pipe sealing to the cylinder. Also a bit gained on the bottom is better than stalling on a hill.

I really wasn't trying to open a can of worms about whether the torque ring was a scam or not. I already have one mated to a stock exhaust. Was just curious if it was going to be a good thing to continue using together with the RB Mod and rev pipe. Thats all. Oh well.
