48 T sprocket, chain length.

Post by pumpguy »

I have a spare rear wheel for my H series KDX 200, and am thinking of fitting a 48 tooth sprocket. The CS sprocket is standard 13 tooth and the chain is standard 108 links.

Using an online chain length calculator, it says the center distance using the 108 link chain will decrease by .172", or a little less than 3/16", compared to the standard 47 tooth sprocket.

I could measure the amount of adjustment I have left, but the bike is not where I can get to it right now.

Does anyone know from their personal experience if I can use a 48 tooth sprocket with the standard 108 link chain and 13 T CS?

Hmm, could be close to being a little tight but would probably be ok. I'm running 13/48 with a 110 link chain. Snail adjuster when new was at 3 and was just recently adjusted to 3.5 after 6 years. I do tend to run my chains a little on the loose side though.

With the snails at 3, you have quite a bit of rear adjustment left. Combined that with a 110 link chain, this doesn't sound too encouraging for what I was hoping to do. My 108 link O ring chain is in very good condition, and I really don't want to buy a longer one just to go up one tooth on the rear sprocket.

Maybe I can find an extra link set and another master link to come up with the needed extra length.

Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it.

How much adjustment do you have with the 13/47 and 108 link chain?

You think the adjustment wouldn't be enough? I think it would be real close but just might work.

On another site, RMATV I think, there is a post saying a 48 T sprocket will work with standard 108 link chain and 13 T CS sprocket.

Guess I will just have to put the sprocket on and see for myself.

Thanks again.

15-48 is set on about position 2 , chain has very little wear on it, new sprockets

Good news!

With a new 48 T rear sprocket, the fit is just fine. Snails are now set at 3. No other changes were made.

Thanks again to all who replied. Hope this helps others considering this change.

Have you guys found any issues with the chain guide when going to a bigger sprocket?
