Tusk Talon 120/90-18 Rear Tire

Post by SS109 »

Well, I decided to try a different rear tire. The Tusk Talon looked interesting and the price is great compared to the IRC or other premium tire brands. I'll be comparing it to my go to 220 Ride semi-gummy and IRC VE33S Gekkota rear tires. Going by my first real look at it, I don't think this tire will last nearly as long due to this tire being what I would say is a full gummy compound. That said, it looks like this thing is going to give crazy good traction. I'll be running it with Tubliss and will be starting out at 8psi. The video below shows my new go to front, the Bridgestone X31 90/100-21, at 69 hours and the IRC VE33S Gekkota at roughly 50 hours plus a quick first look at the new Tusk Talon 120/90-18 rear.

I have a 2 friends now that ride the Tusk Recon which is a gummy or semi gummy, and they're very pleased with it... I've not seen the Talon, but it's a bit more open tread pattern for clearing mud. They're likely the same compound I'd imagine. The Talon look to rip and chink knobs more though, but that could be from riding style/terrain or could be due to the Recon having more knobs and more closely spaced.

8 psi? Gosh, I don’t even race with more than 6 on that Tubliss setup. Usually run about 4 in my Pirelli Garacross rear. Obviously though I’m in slower tighter conditions than your faster desert riding! The VE33s is super good until it’s gone, like brownies out of the oven - they go away too fast! We’ve run the VE33 regular flavor and most of the Tusk offerings but I haven’t been as happy with them as the Garacross. My buddy runs the Tusk hybrid rear on his KDX and loves it.

Be interesting to see how that Talon does in mud with big sharp rocks, might be good for where we are in these SW Virginia mountains.
