Richer Pilot for elevation?

Post by Jon220 »

Has any one ever heard of going 1 to 2 sreps richer on the pilot jet for elevation? I have a 2000 kdx 220 and was running a 140 main 35 pilot and 1173 needle in top notch (leanest), I ride at 8000 + feet and have 2 mechanics say go to a 130 Main and 1 to 2 steps richer from the stock pilot?

It doesn't make sense to change the A/F mixture to anything other than what works. So, if the air is less the higher in altitude you go, then the fuel must be reduced as well to keep that ratio the same. I'd say either the mechanics mis-spoke or are needing to explain their rational...

What happens when you adjust your air screw?

ADJUSTING THE AIRSCREW MAKES THE FIRST 1/4 THROTTLE RESPONSE BETTER BUT IT STILL HAS A BOG. TRIED PUTTING IN A 48 AND A 42 PILOT WITH A 132 MAIN CLIP IN #1 TOP SLOT. BIKE SEEMED TO HAVE MORE LOW END ,THROTTLE RESPONSE BETTER BUT NOT CLEAN EVEN WITH A/S 3 1/2 TURNS OUT. FINALLY TRIED 132 MAIN 38 PILOT 1 3/4 ON A/S AND BIKE RUNS THE BEST ITS EVER RUN. HAVE NOT HAD TIME TO DO A PLUG CHOP BUT DID TRY NEEDLE IN # 2 POSITION AND AFTER 1/4 THROTTLE HIT WAS VERY ABRUPT , TO MUCH FOR A TRAIL RIDE. SO SETTLED FOR NEEDLE IN #1 POSITION.

Excellent. Now you'll know what a 'lean bog' is right away. Most people referring to 'bogs' are complaining about a rich 4-cycling condition, and I think we all assumed that too.

could not leave well enough alone , tried 35 pilot with needle in #1,2 and 3 . Ran best in one but then changed the spark plug to 9 ES which is what they said came stock it had an 8 when i bought it and it had the lean bog. talked to Gunnison motorcycle shop again and they said at high altittude a small bike (200, 220) does not develop enough crank case pressure to suck fuel through a small pilot jet. so they go one step bigger than stock. I tried a 45 pilot today, bike runs good and seems to run cooler, have not tried it in the mountains yet. Will test it and see.

Tried a 45 pilot today throttle response was very good but could not it to run clean, still smoking and spooge, a/s 1 1/2 to 3 out . the low end was awesome I could almost idle up hills in 2nd that I was screaming to climb in 1st before. wanted to get above timberline to really test it but not enough time came home checked the plug it was black, changed to a 42 pilot (stock) and will try to get out to test sometime.
