JD Jet kit seems off

Against better judgement I decided to give the JD Jet kit a run. Received the kit today (so not yet installed) and have some real questions. I had always heard the "jetting instructions" were great and figured this would be a reason to try the kit. That is a joke. The instructions tell you how to install the jets in your carb. If you don't already know how to do that, I don't think I would be screwing with tuning it anyways.
Following the listed recommended setup I would install the following:
RED needle in #4 clip
165 main (for sea level to 3000 ft)
does not specify on pilot jet
This seems way rich. I have a PC complete exhaust system and the air box lid removed and I think I'm rich now (too the point of having spooge running down the silencer) with I think a 155 and stock needle in the #2 or #3 clip. It just seems like the recommended setup is going in the wrong direction. Am I missing something here. I do a lot of very slow riding following the kids around but still have "rich signs" when riding with the buddies at high speed. Does the RED needle make that big a difference with all the other circuits when compared to the stock needle? What say you'll.
