Need Help with Jetting

Post by brandongraham »

I just bought my 1st dirtbike. 2002 KDX 200

I thought it ran fine, but a few friends said my Jetting must be all OFF. It smokes a bit to much and has too much excess fuel blowing out the pipe.

And it must Foul the plugs each time I ride, because the next time I ride, it does not start and then I ADD a new Spark Plug and it fires up on the first kick.

I have a FMF Gnarly Pipe and PowerCore2 on it. And have the Airbox lid OFF.

I am not ready for the RB Carb. yet.

My Carb is stock and I will find out the Jets in it now and report back.

Clean air filter? Silencer freshly packed?

Air Filter is CLEAN.

Silencer is Good.

I am new here but what does a Air Filter or Silencer have do with my Plugs being Fouled after each ride.

Is this a Carb. problem, maybe my jetting is way to much.

Well, they both affect your jetting!

Much more than you think. Dirty air filter and clogged silencer equates to less airflow which causes your jetting to be rich where it might otherwise be just fine. Best bet is ditch the airbox lid if you haven't, and then follow the sticky on jetting proecure. We can guess at jets to throw at it all day long, but every bike is different, and every rider even more so.

Indeed...those were just two things to check because your jetting could be right or at least better than you describe, and cause these symptoms.

I need some help here.

I was thinking about doing the Carb. Modification with RD Designs, So I decided to take off my Carb for the first time and see what Jetting I had.

Some how I dropped the Carb and broke one of the pieces that hold the Pin in place to keep the Float in place.

Is this something that can be fixed.

Oh, crap. As far as I know that means the carb is toast. It is a casting so it cannot be welded and I highly doubt any type of adhesive/bonding agent would withstand the constant fuel exposure and vibration.

Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong!

EDIT: You might be able to use this stuff to fix it: http://www.alumiweld.com/index.html Supposedly can fix cast/pot metal.

DOH! Time to hit up ebay or the FS/wanted on here for a OEM PWK carb. Take to a local TIG welder first.

I work with a guy that broke the ear off the carb that holds the float pin on his old four wheeler. Another guy from work convinced him to clean it up REAL good and use JB weld on it and bake it in the oven for a bit so it could cure good.

We all got a good laugh at the guy for trying it but that was about a year and a half ago and it is still working fine. So yes it can be fixed but if you go that route I wouldn't spend the money on the RB carb mods on a cobbed up carb.

If you do end up buying a carb and plan on having RB do the mods than I would just buy the carb from RB with the mods already done. You will get a new carb all done for probably less than buying a used carb and having it done.

The air striker is supposed to be more forgiving to jetting variances.

Right from RB all done with the mods and air screw it is about $370 for the air striker. $350 for a non air striker.

The air striker is a little more advanced with venting and such. It has no dissadvantage as far as I know, so I would probably go that route.

If you wan to go the RB route in the long run just get the carb from him now. $345total - $165carb mod = selling you the carb for $180. If you buy a new carb it will need jets, and possibly a slide ($$). His carb will come jetted all good to go for you.

The difference between an AS and non-AS used to be A LOT more than $20 so definitely get the AS carb regardless.

RB does not take Credit Cards, so I do not have time to waiting 7 to 10 Days on getting the New Carb.

I will have to buy a Used one for my trip and then send it to RB.

Someone get this RB set up with PayPal. Hell I would even pay the Credit Card Fees.
