KDX wheel on KX forks.

Post by rbates9 »

I am trying to work out the spacers and what not with Ron Black right now to have him make the KDX wheel fit the KX forks. There is another post of what some one else did to do this. At this point RB is asking for a KDX axle to have in his hands to see what needs to be done to it. I'm not ready to tear down my bike yet because the snow is holding off for now and it could end the season at any time. Dose any one have a stock KDX axle they would be willing to part with? This could make the KX swap alot easier ( if you didn't need a new front wheel to add to the cost).

Dumb question...If RB had a 95-06 KDX front axle, could he machine the spacers to utilize a stock KDX 95-06 KDX wheel with what ever forks were sent to him to have the stem switched?

If this is possible, an eBay purchase might be arranged and the axle sent to him to keep and use in the shop. That way, he could have the axle to use for all of us. Seems this would be a lot easier than having to try and piece all the parts for a complete front end if it was something he would be willing to do.

I am contemplating a conversion so I am interested in what might be worked out.

I just got an email back from him. He has a KDX axle and front wheel in his shop now. I have been talking with him for a little while about doing a "axle and spacer mod" so you could just get the forks and triple clamps to do the swap. I bought a complete KX 250 to get the front off and when I got home I realized that the front wheel on the KX had a crack in it so I am looking to get a price on what it will cost compared to a new rim for the KX hub. But either way if he can do the mod I think a lot of people will be interested in reusing the KDX wheel. And you should be able to keep the odo drive.

Is this something he is going to do or something he is just looking into doing? If it's a done deal, was he able to give any idea on cost? I just really like the idea of just purchasing the fork and trees and being able to reuse the rest.

Ron has proven to be a KDX weapon!

If anyone would and could provide a complete solution it would be Ron Black.

I am looking forward to see where this goes....

Stupid alert....So will the stock KDX caliper mount up to KX forks?

Or will we have to get a used KX caliper too?

I like the sound of that mod too...so I can use my wheels I already have :)

As of right now I am in the research and development stage. He is holding back on talking about cost (understandably at this point). But I hope to get some more info in the next few days. I have to get some measurements back to him. I would think that as long as the forks you were going to use used the same axle as the 2000 KX 250 the spacer set up should be the same?

I didn't try the KDX caliper on the KX forks, but the KX caliper bolted directly on the KDX forks, lined up perfect. Bracket and all.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe you can use the stock KDX caliper with late model (97+) KX forks. I am not sure if the stock KDX caliper will work with KXF forks. I'm contemplating using 2004 KXF forks; however, not many have done so and I don't really know what I would run into.

How much of an interest do the other people have if this goes thru? It might help if there is more of a demand. Ron B seems to be doing his home work pretty good to get it right the first time.

I think I was looking at this backwards.

I was thinking of using the new forks/trees with the KDX wheel/axle/caliper.

From reading the last couple posts, I believe you are stating using the new forks/trees/axle with the KDX wheel. Is this correct?

I don't know what I was thinking. I thought the axle was more in line with the wheel instead of the forks so you would keep the KDX axle. I was just assuming using the KDX axle for all and being able to make adapters off the one in house.

I'm trying to get my head wrapped around this.

You send Ron the new fork/tree combo and your stock tree. He will press the KDX stem out of the original tree and into the new fork/tree combo. He can then use the KDX wheel/axle he has to machine the spacers needed to use your KDX wheel/axle with the new fork/tree combo. Does this sound correct?

If that is correct, he would need to spec up different spacers for every different set of fork/tree combos he receives based upon the stock KDX wheel/axle and new fork.

I think Ron will have to weigh in on this. I am sure that Ron would keep a journal of different configuration.... that is if your info is correct.

SO FAR THIS IS NOT A SERVICE THAT HE IS OFFERING....This is something that is still in progress. I would like to think it will happen but there is a chance it may not. Like Inda said he may need to weigh in on this. Sorry for any confusion. I will keep you posted as it goes on.

Hi guys,

Yes, I am looking into making some mods to the KDX axle and spacers so you can use the stock KDX wheel assembly. I have had a few ask for this, so I going to see if I can make work.

Making a new axle from bar stock would be "expensive" so we are hoping for a more affordable alternative... by using the stock KDX axle. I have got my hands on a KDX axle and have the front wheel, but no speedo drive. Be patient, I working on it to see if it’s feasible to do.

I can send you an E series speedo drive (I don't know if E and H series are different) for nothing if you like. Consider it a "thank you" for the excellent service you provided me on my fork conversion. :supz:
