Almost there

Post by wbdisco »

I have finally started the swap. I have pressed out the KX stem and getting ready pull the front off of my KDX. Just one problem, I can't find a dang front wheel to save my life. I have checked ebay for a couple of weeks now but everyone wants $80-100 plus $30 to ship , which is more than i have in my forks and triple put together . And besides most that are on there have nice dents or need to be trued. If anyone can help me out that would be great I need a 99-02 KX125/250 front wheel. I already have the axles, but still need the stupid spacers. I am so close I can taste it.

look around at the local MX tracks and you might find guys with parts....but now that the bikes are getting 10+ years on them....Ebay/Craigslist might be the best way.

I use craiglook to search via zipcode and area radius

IIRC there's a gent on this site who's thinking about marketing a machined axle that would allow you to use your own wheel, etc and not have to buy the KX bits other than triples/forks. I'll see if I can find his name for you. Don't know if he's in business or not at this time.

OK looks like his username is akracing. His thread is "fork conversion in the UK" and the last post was 8/15/10.

Give him a holler and see what the damage will be for a machined axle.

Hi, i tried contacting akracing too for the alxe but to no avail. he did not reply. but note he is using stainless steel for the axle which is not ideal material for axle. SS is too hard that will flex less. someone else made a custom alxe on this site and he recommeded to me to use steel 4340 for alxe. just for your infor.

if all it needs is to be machined, i guess i could give it a shot. My dad has a mill, 9" and 13" lathe. I guess all I that would need to be done is cut to the diameter of the KDX wheel bearings right??

the original axles are made from aluminum aren't they? If so, it shouldn't be that hard to do. You should be able to reuse the KDX spacers I would think.

nevermind the previous post, I probably won't be able to make the axle, because our lathe can't cut metric treads. What I may try to do is use my KX and KDX axle and put them together and make one I can use. With a little TIG welding and the lathe to clean it up. It may work it might not
