Maintaining stock geometry while doing fork conversion?

Post by David_L6 »

Are the KX forks that everyone is using for this conversion the same length from the centerline of the axle to the top of the forks as KDX forks? I haven't seen any mention of lowering the ride height to maintain stock KDX geometry on any of the conversion threads that I've read. I don't want to change the geometry of the KDX when I install MX forks. I just want better forks. The CR250 forks that I plan on using will have to have the ride height lowered ~ 1.5".

Yes... they all are longer to some extent. They all need to be raised in the clamps....

I have mine raised .5" and it feels as if it handles like it did before the conversion. Well, better actually but it still drops in to a turn the same.

I raised my '98 KX125 forks about 1-1/8" cause my KDX came with risers. No problem and feels (seat of the pants) like the same geometry.

1 1/8"?? wow! Wouldn't that put the lower triple well below the mounting area on the forks?

I went right to the bottom. Maybe my memory is FUBAR as per usual. I'll throw the micrometer on it later today.

Ya - I was FOS, Measured out at .993" from the top of the upper clamp to the top of the cap. Looks like more but then my wife says I exaggerate the length of everything

That's the kind of thing that I don't want if I can avoid it. 1/4" to 3/8" I can live with. I'm going to have MX-Tech lower the ride height of a set of CR250 forks so that I'll have to slide the forks up in the triple clamps no more than 1/4" or so to maintain the correct ride height for the KDX 200. I'm also going to have the forks re-valved for hare scrambles while MX-Tech has them. The stock CR250 spring rate should be dead on.
