How do you tell...

Post by paceyman »

... what forks you have?

I just purchased what is suppose to be a set of 2001 KX250 forks and triple trees. They are on the bike and the one fork seal is seeping a bit so it's time for seals. Just need to know what to order in.

Thanks.

You pretty much have to take the word of the seller, since there are no vin numbers stamped into the forks.

I put them on my 06 KDX200. Seller claims they are from a 2001 KX250.

What mm are they....Best thing to cross reference with. They are generally the same within the tube dia (span of years).

Is that taken at the upper clamp or lower clamp? Two different sizes.

Thanks Fuzzy.

All below prefaced with 'I think...'

**edit**
..wrong..I think...so I got rid of it.

Found this:

The 03 got 48mm forks ...

..and

The 2002's had the 48mm forks as well..

Both from some other forum.

This from Wiki on the KX 250:

1999
46 mm Upside Down Cartridge Fork

2000
48 mm Upside Down Cartridge Fork

But...keep reading...the '99/'00 are the same model designation (L) which makes them being different fork-wise unlikely.

This conflicts with the above:

46 Kawasaki KX-250L1 (99)
46 Kawasaki KX-250L2-L3 (00-01)

47.5 Kawasaki KX-125L4/M1/M2 (02-04)
47.5 Kawasaki KX-250L4/M1/M2 (02-04)

From HERE! The source HE got it from is dead..but it looks good, don't it?

**edit#756**

I got the source of HIS source!! yuk yuk yuk....more than one way to skin a cat.

HERE.

Good info on bearings and all sorts of stuff. Uh...this list appears to be a bit short on the diameter side of things, though.

Anyway...the wiki input I think is not correct. I recall the change to 48mm being in '02. The 47.5 part is not significant. They're commonly called '48s'.

I've looked on this board for a summation of fork sizes...thought I'd read it before...but didn't find it.

Someone else needs to chime in with the facts-o-the-matter.

Thanks CC - This weekend I'll be at a race where a suspension expert is suppose to be there. I will have the man take a look and get some seals heading my way.

I will advise what I have after the race.

Well he never showed up so I called the original suspension guy and he cleared it up. Seals and seal savers are on the way.

KYB's is what I have.

Thanks.

Re: 'KYB's is what I have.'

Well...yeah. I thought everyone knew that already.

I guess not.

This, then, is a good example making the case for asking specific questions.

You asked about KX250 forks. That they came off a KX means they are Kayaba forks. It didn't occur to me that part of the question, 'How do you tell what forks you have?' would have anything to do with an answer of, 'Kayaba'.

The 'what size' questions had to do with the model of Kayaba forks..not whether they were, say, Ohlins or Showas.

Next time, we'll do better.....if we know what we're supposed to be doin'!!
