Stem Swap

Post by rdsrf »

So I've read a lot about guys pressing the KDX triple clamp stem into the KX lower triple clamp to do this conversion. What I haven't found any info on is why this is done. Can anyone enlighten me? Is it possible to modify the KX stem to make it work?

I guess you could, but pressing the kd stem in the kx clamps is probably the simplest solution. P.S. Where are you from? Welcome!

You do it because it has to be done. They are completely different. The KX cannot be made to work.

I'm from Honolulu, Hawaii. We ride some tight, muddy, off-camber stuff out here. Lots of roots and ruts too. The reason I was asking is the gentlemen doing the work swapping the stems for me asked why it needed to be done. I told him everything I'd read said it needed to be done but I couldn't actually tell him why. I told him I'd look into it and get back to him. He said he'd hate for me to do all that work if it wasn't neccessary.

The issue really is in the steering stem bearings. You will not find a top steering stem bearing that fits the KX stem whose outer race fits the KDX frame.
