KX 500 fork conversion project bike finally gettin goin

Post by TopperHarley »

This one was a drop in fit. 2000KX500forks in an 03KDX frame. Just had to modify the stops a bit. I have been thinking about and gathering parts for this bike for a year and a half. Finally getting her together.

bearings and stem were same as KDX. No trip to the machine shop to get stem pressed out and into KDX lower. also, the forks are a bit shorter than KX125&250 forks. Therefore, you do not have to set them so high above the top clamp to get the bike to sit level.

That rocks. How big are they (mm)? Full comp/rebound adjustments?

I may be wrong on the length now that I compare to my 03KX250 forks.
Someone else told me they were shorter. I took their word for it.

There's a member one here with a KX500 conversion. Do a search for it, but I'm sure whoever it is will surface soon.

I did fins someone who had done a conversion using KX500 forks with a YZ triple. they ended up changing their tubes to YZ USD because the valve stacks were more versatile thank the KX500 were. I will be going gold on mine, when I can afford it.

How has the KX500 triple clamps/forks conversion worked out? Did you have to make any mods besides the stops? How about shims under the top clamp? I just bought a 1999 KX500 forks and triple clamp, waiting to get them here to see how they fit.
