Steering stem press out
When I ask the machine shop to press the KX stem and bearing out of the KX triple clamp, what direction does the stem get pressed? Does it get pressed down out of the stem, or up out of it? Any gotchas that they should know about?
I presume the KDX stem and bearing will get pressed into the KX triple clamp in the same way?
Thanks!

Re: '..any gotchas'
Yes.
Don't have your foot under the press. The stem can come out with a pretty good TWANG. Enough to take your foot off if it's in the way.
No. The stem does NOT get pressed in the SAME way...it gets pressed in the opposite way it came out (kind'a down and out, UP and in)!
Do make sure the clip on the bottom of the stem is in place when it's pressed into the KX clamp.
Hope this helps!
Glad to be of service!!

I'll tell you what, I could not get my KDX stem pressed out. 20 ton press and I bent the triple clamp.
My experience seems to be the exception, though.
I did it a different way that I won't go into here. You can search on my posts, I suppose. Worked really well for me (and the old KX)

Heat is a must.... this loosens the industrial lock-tite and allows the stem to be pressed out. So... there's another gotcha!

12tons and copious amounts of heat is what it took to press my KDX stem out. The KX stem slid right out with minimal fuss. Go figure.

I have removed two kdx stems with my 6 ton (chinese bottle jack) press in my garage. In both cases I wrapped the steel stem with flexible ice pack (available at drug stores) and heated the aluminum clamp with a propane torch to the point that I couldn't touch it. I used a 2 inch high piece of scrap sheet metal to wrap around the bottom of the ice pack to protect it from the flame. They just made a "pop" noise and then would continue to come out slowly and easily.
Both pieces remain clean with no galling or other damage at all.
To reinstall I put the stems in a freezer and heat the clamps in my oven to 300 degrees.
This is the same process I use for crankbearings, etc.

Re: 'The graphic' hijack comment..
The people that have no idea what you're talking about are talking about it here!
Heating is good. Cooling is good. The two of 'em together would have to be gooder! ..and with a little bottle jack! Good thinking!
KayD: Yeah...I remember that bell.

Re: Buying another stem....
I wonder at times why I bother to repeat the same things over and over and, well...over.....
..and over. Nobody listens anyway....
And then I say them again!!
Oh well..I've only BEEN sayin' it for a couple of years. Maybe there's still hope.
I think buying a second stem is the way to go. I did!

The 'original' goes back at least to the spring of '05...I think quailchaser was still riding your steed back then.....
