1993 upside down forks

Post by EPalmer »

Hi Guys,

I have a 1991 kdx200 which has been fitted with the newer 1993 upside down forks (not by myself)

They are far to soft for me so id like to upgrade the spring, does anybody know where I could get one from? I'm really struggling

Also if thats a no go I was thinking of fitting kx125 or kx250 forks, but I'm assuming id need to change the triple clamps and front wheel, brake etc?

Thanks

Ed

Do you have a picture of the forks?

If they are 1993 - 1994 KDX200 forks, then Race Tech 3647 springs will work.

I went through a similar process with my 94... here's what I did.

I also fit some gold valves and the forks work pretty good now.
1994 KDX200, Beta 200rr, yz125, yz250, kx100 modded for adult, gasgas contact 250.

1993 upside down forks

Thanks for the replies guys, I will get a photo of the forks later! The brake line has a metal section just before the caliper which comes around the front of the fork leg and has a mount.

You're welcome. I love a good suspension thread. :pop:

Another thing is do you have some way to measure the diameter of the chrome inner tube? 1993 - 1994 KDX200 was 41 mm. 1991 - 1994 KDX250 was 43 mm. 1991 - 1993 KX125 / KX250 / KX500 forks are blue and 43 mm inner tubes also.

The brake line does sound like KDX, though.

Yep I'll measure them later, I changed the fork seals when I first got the bike and I believe they were 41mm from. Memory. Mine have been painted a horrible grey colour so think I'm going to source some more KDX USD forks and a stiffer spring, if mine do turn out to be KDX forks.

http://anopros.com/ is a place I recently read about for anodizing. A guy on Vital MX had his 1993 KX125 fork tubes done there, and they look great in the photo. They are the same shade of blue as the KDX forks. He said Pro Circuit got their anodizing done there.

What is your weight in full riding gear? Race Tech shows 0.42, 0.44, 0.46 and 0.48 for their 3647 fork springs.

If you are OK with buying custom wound springs and decide to get some different forks, swapping to a set of KDX250 forks and clamps would not cost a ton, compared to getting a KX wheel, forks, clamps and brakes. (Same for KLX300)

I'm probably 220lbs with all my gear on! Would the kdx 250 forks be better than my current ones?

If I was you, AND those forks are just ugly, then I would keep them. It would not be worth the small performance boost for the amount of trouble and money it would be.

What is your skill level, riding terrain, age and rough height? I am thinking the .44 would be about right for you.

It would be alot easier to keep these. I would say I'm an average rider, I've raced a couple of enduros this year (for the first time) and come top 5 in novice category, riding terrain around here is anything from tight woods to long open lanes. Thanks very much for all of your help by the way it's great.

Congratulations on racing!!

The 44's do sound about right for you. Going from a .30 to .44 will definitely have a faster rebound. Besides a lot of trouble trying to do something with the stock Jurassic rebound valving, a little thicker oil might be worth a try.

You are welcome on the help. I used to do some work on suspension around 2005 or so (WOW, LONG TIME)
