kx stem vs kdx stem

Post by layoutd »

just had both stems side by side, each with the lower clamp. it feels like the kdx stem is almost 1 pound heavier. is this the clamp? is the kdx stem beefier? is there just that much more tech in the kx? if so, imagine how good of a bike the kdx could be if it just got hand-me-downs every 4 years. shame the market is not as big at the MX market and it could drive the change.

My KDX stem is steel and the KX one is aluminium.

Steel is nice for durability, but aluminium (as you guys spell it) eh?
I think I will be making one if I end up requiring the knurling. Maybe I will make a few for spares or give-aways.

so tell me why i can't just use the kx stem in the kdx. seems that the kdx needs spacers to fit properly. is it because the bearings will not fit on the kx stem? if this is the case, can bearings be made to fit? is there a kx bearing that will fit?
just thinking how i can use the kx stem, not that i am against the pressing and knurling and shimming and spacering.

i've got a kdx missing a front end in my garage and hopefully i can get a test ride in before i do a hare scrammble on the 11th.

Drive on down, and I will show you why it won't work. If all else fails with your stem/clamps/pressing/machine shop shopping/etc.

Thanks,
Jason

The top KX bearing cannot be made to work in the KDX races, it's way too big. And similarly, the KDX top bearing does not fit the KX stem.
There is not one available for purchase anywhere either... many have looked.

If this would have been an option then all of us would have opted for that.
