Another KDX suspension upgrade thread
Posted: 07:34 pm Dec 17 2014
I've been looking for a suspension upgrade for the kdx220 since I purchased it.
What I stumbled upon was a 'vintage' setup from an old ktm 300. 1994 fork and shock for basicly free. They appear to be in decent condition, not leaking any fluids, and move freely.
My understanding is that the fork is a White Power 4054, but a little bit rarer than the normal non-adjustable version, as this one has compression and rebound adjusters externally. The rebound is up top, with regular air bleeders. The compression is down on the fork lugs, with RED slots for a common screwdriver to adjust.
The shock is also White Power, but I'm not certain of exactly which model. I'll dig around and find specifics, then update this post.
For now, I have rough deminsions of everything, and it appears the triple trees are very similarly sized between the kdx and the white power (let's call it WP from now on) WP triples. I haven't taken the stem off the KDX forks, and plan to ebay a kdx triple to use the stem instead of destroying my currntly working KDX fork setup.
Things I"ll need to purchase:
brake caliper, line, master that has a bolt pattern of about 60-61mm for mounting on the fork lug.
17mm ID wheel bearings to fit my current KDX wheel, OR just buy another wheel to fit, to ease the transition.
KDX steering stem
fork guards, as these are USD style forks. I'm not a fan of USD forks in general, but hey, these were almost free
oh, you were wondering why I went with a 20 year old fork ? because they don't leak, have rebound/comrpession adjustements, and cost me a grand total of $45.
sweet, bring on the cold weather so i can stop riding and tear it apart for spring.
i really love this bike.
FORK PICS:
if it comes in an old KONA box, it's gotta be good !
whoa, rockshox packaging too ???
ahhhhh looky there
we'll see if this is doable or not:
if anyone has experience with this particular fork, like "its gonna assplode at 88.8 mph!" it would be appreciated. otherwise, i'll start getting stuff together to make it work.
sweet :)
