Conversion not yet done..... Little help please?

Post by robkdx »

Im fitting a 2000 KX 125 fork into my 06 KDX200. Ive been stuck on the front wheel. I got a complete KX front end but the wheel is stuffed. Can I fit the KDX wheel to it? What do i need to make it work?

Also does anybody have drawings of the KDX steerer tube? I wish to make an alloy one up for the KX crowns.

You can use the rim from the KDX wheel, but not the hub, it just doesn't work.

Drawings of the steer tube? Are you talking about the spacer that is needed? Just buy one from RB, it's easy that way.

Ive read you can use the front wheel but with spacers. Just dont know which ones.

Was going to make a new tube to press into the crown.

there was a time Ron offered custom turned spacers to run a KDX wheel with KX forks but because of the many different forks out there he stopped offering that service

a service he DOES offer is swapping the steering stems (that part that is pressed into the triples) from your KDX triple onto your KX triples so you can bolt the whole thing up to your KDX frame (using the steering tube that is part of your frame) easy-peasy

you might also need the aforementioned spacer

what exactly do you mean "the wheel is stuffed" ?
it may very well be salvageable

I can press out the stems, no problem there but I was thinking of making up a new stem out of alloy to the correct size to press in. Just tidier in my mind as this is a long term bike for me.

Front KX rim has a big dent in it and an aftermarket rim. Hub is the only part of the original wheel. I dont think the KDX rim and spokes will just swap over.

I think you are overthinking the stem but if you want to go that way that's cool (just keep in mind the money you spend on making an unseen part look tidier could have been spend on a new front wheel

im not sure on the hub but I think you can relace the stock KDX rim onto the KX hub and be all set
im sure someone will chime in and conform that

RB still lists the adapters for the KDX wheel to 1999-2003 2 stroke forks.

Scroll to the bottom of the page. http://rb-designs.com/rb_designs_llc_027.htm
The very existence of flamethrowers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves, “You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I’m just not close enough to get the job done.”

Yup, easy as lacing a wheel...NOT EASY.....they do swap over though. Unlace the kx rim, unlace the kdx rim, lace said kdx rim onto kx hub...same spokes, same position....easy as lacing a rim....I pay people to do it for me!

Well I will give it a shot. Building the wheel is no issue for me. Im a bicycle tech and wheel specialist. Spoke length just doesnt look like it will work to me.

as long as the a
amount of spokes is the same, as is the diameter of the hubs and rims I don't see an issue, even more since I wont attempt to do it myself

I will confirm that. I laced a KDX rim onto the KX hub that came with my front end. I had the same issue - the KX rim that came with my parts was not usable. I had never built a wheel before but it was actually pretty easy. No issue there for kdxrob, doesn't sound like. The only thing I had to do was drill out the holes in the KDX rim to accept the KX spoke nipples, which are bigger than the KDX pieces. Spoke length was fine.

Conversion not yet done..... Little help please?

Post by robkdx »

Not there yet. With my partner have a couple of surgery's this year and other stuff it was put on the back burner. Dropping stems and front axles off tomorrow to a mate who is an engineer. To me it looks an easy job to make the KDX wheel work on the KX forks. :supz:

I hope to have the forks on the bike with the front wheel on by the end of the weekend. Next Monday I have surgery on my wrist. So I will slowly put the rest back together while getting over the surgery.
