2001 kdx 220r fork conversion?

Post by Dustin »

When it comes down to working on bikes i've always stuck to regular maintenance or small stuff never made any big changes to my bikes so I was wondering how I would go about a fork swap for kdx 220r 2001, would it be kx 250, 125, or 500 forks? what year should the forks be from? which parts are needed on or around them ( pictures would be awesome)? etc feed back greatly appreciated

just the same as an kdx 200 500 is a direct swap with a kx wheel and the 250/125 forks need a spacer and maybe some machine work to press the kdx stem onto the kx tree

So much information available that we have an entire sub-forum devoted to it. Search is your friend. Basically, to answer your questions in order: Yes, any, and depends on the answer to the first 2. Realistically, whatever you can find cheap on Ebay, CL, or locally. For KX front ends you want the whole thing (forks, front wheel, triples). You can reuse the KDX brake on a KX fork and vice-versa. Easiest swap is KLX300...straight bolt-on affair. Next easiest is probably KX500, followed by 99-05 KX125/250. Just about every front end has found its way onto a KDX, including Showas, Marzocchi, Olins. Only limited by budget and time.

so when people say the KLX300 forks are a direct swap, does that mean I can leave eveything untouched, and just slide the old forks out of the triple tree and slip the KLX ones in with no issues?

No you need to change the triple clamps to the KLX ones.

Thanks jason its 92-95 forks fit into 91 clamps right?
So if you find 91 clamps you can get a front end from 91-95?

2001 kdx 220r fork conversion?

Post by DJNiedz »

has anyone made a spreadsheet with all all the interchangeability info?

there's a lot of info! its difficult to sift through.

so the smoothest swap for my 2001 220R, would be KLX300 forks, and I also need to swap out the triple trees?
anything else? will I need to knurl anything, make any spacers or shims?

Also from what I've read it sounds like KX500 is also a good candidate? trying to use the search to avoid repeated questions, it would be nice if all the info was consolidated into one document.

Kx500 or 90-91 125 and 250 or klx300 are all equally as easy. You need the tripples forks wheel and axle

KLX 300 allows you to use the KDX axle, wheel, and trip meter.

YES. All H series bikes are the same regardless of year.

It's not all consolidated into one list, but the fork conversion forum is full of information on what forks will work best. Anything will fit, no matter what bike they're off of. Some guys even prefer Honda and Suzuki forks. The question becomes how much work are you willing to do? If you want strictly bolt on, that has been covered here and there is lots of info in the fork sub forum.
