1997 KDX220 Direct Swap?

Post by scoyne »

Is there such a thing? Is there a bike out there that I can do a complete frontend swap?
I would find a donor and swap EVERYTHING. Upper / Lower Clamps, Forks, Hub, Rotor, Caliper, etc.

KLX 300 / KX500 bolts on. Anything else is possible but requires a stem swap. Not a big deal.

Year doesn't really matter in this case.

I was concerned about the stem not fitting the frame. Sounds like an easy bolt on.
If I can't find a donor bike I might go the stem swap.
Thanks.

I think klx250/300 fits, and kx5 pretty much anything 86 and up. We haven't got experience with every single year, but if you look through this section you will find loads of info. Obviously, you want the newest forks you can find/afford. The stem swap is really no big deal, so You can broaden your search quite a bit. Just remember, a complete front end is desirable in any case.

I just did the swap with a '97 KLX300 onto my '97 kdx220. Other then rebuilding the forks and replacing the bearings it was a direct swap. Way better, should have done this when I first got the bike. Much smother and more stable at speed.
