Steering stop modification for fork conversion

Post by wilkesw »

I've read a lot of fork conversion threads that say that once converted, the KX top triple triple clamp contacts the KDX fuel tank before hitting the steering stop on the KX bottom triple clamp. The fix for this problem seems to be to increase the width of the steering stop tabs, but I can't find a detailed account of how to accomplish this.

I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a 2001 KX125 front end for my 2002 KDX220, but before I do, I want to ensure that I understand exactly how to fix the steering stop issue.

First, can anyone confirm that I'm likely to encounter this problem, given the year models of bike and parts I'm working with? And if so, can someone explain how to implement the fix, taking into account that I have the mechanical aptitude of a chimpanzee?

Thanks for your help and patience!

Personally, I just drilled a hole through the stock stop, and bolted a piece of metal to it. I'm sure there are other ways!

I put a 99 kx 250 front end on my 03 kdx and it just lightly touches the tank on the left side, right side does not touch. I have just been monitoring the tank for wear and have noticed very little so far. I believe I have read that one fix is to take the heat gun to the tank and put a small dent in the area touching.

I drilled holes in the stops and then tapped them to m5
I screwed in a panhead screw with a counternut for fine tuning

My tank was hitting pretty bad but I do have a clarke oversized tank on it which may be part of the reason it hits so much

I did just as diymirage, drill and tap, can't remember what size, but they are adjustable

i guess i didnt have the room for counternuts like i said before, i just spaced them out with washers
(on a side note, that headlight has been replaced with a KX knockoff, much cleaner looking)

Steering stop modification for fork conversion

Post by rbates9 »

When I put on my KX forks I needed, or I should say wanted the stops on the triple to be a little taller because they would just touch at the top of the stop so I had them tig welded a little taller and had the stop built up as well then filed them back down to where I wanted them. I think that they are about back to stock as far as stop thickness but they clear everything.
