1994 kdx fork options

Post by pcbc »

im new here so here it goes. just bought a running 1994 kdx 200 for $100 it runs good but its been neglected. the fork seals are shot and im worried i wont be happy with stock+ springs. is there a way to make these forks feel more like mx forks without changing the whole frontend? options for rear? i think im a bit heavy for this bike at 270lbs. any advice would be great.

WOW! A running KDX for $100. I think the stiffest fork springs available are .46 or .48 from www.racetech.com
, but stock is .30 (way too soft for your weight). You can find a stiffer shcok spring for the rear easily.

Good luck with it.

Springs are not made for a specific bike model, but you do have to know the model (or donor bike) to order new (or used) ones. Springs typically fit a group of models, but you need to work within the group. The KDX shock uses the same springs as most all YZs.

The trick with forks is to find ones that fit your triple clamps, and that provide an improvement. So you need to find a model with the same outer tube diameter, which requires some research. There is no easy crossover chart.

I don't remember which fork the 94 had. It should match one of these:

90-93 KX 500 and 90 KX 125/250 are 41 MM USD

94-96 KX500 and 91-95 KX 125/250 are 43 MM USD
This is my rifle, this is my gun, the YZ to go fast, the KDX is for fun!

The only other forks that will get cose are 1990 KX125 / KX250 / KX500, and you WILL have to change front brake hoses and wheels.

You are basically looking at getting the same KX front end swap as many others in the KX fork conversion subforum. Changing to 1990 KX forks is not worth the trouble.

Race Tech 3647 springs are the springs for the 1993 - 1994 KDX200 forks.

By the way, since the triple clamps attach to the outer tube, don't go by the inner tube diameter. Also, for the KX500, 1990 is 41mm, 1991 - 1996 is 43mm, but the clamps are not the same offset between 1991 - 1993 and the 1994 - 1996 clamps.

found a guy parting out a 1995 yz250 would these forks be worth the effort? would it be the same about all the other swaps ive been reading? read one post about having to drill the holein the yz triples to the kdx stem would fit? with everything minus controls, fender and tire, rim is included, what would it be worth? would the rear shock fit?

The stock KDX rear shock is pretty good with the right spring for your weight. That fork combo would be ok if it was cheap enough. If you picked a newer kx unit, chances are you would find swap details on here with a ride report.
