advice please for kx fork conversion

Post by carts69 »

Hi, getting confused with all the info i have read regarding the kx fork conversion, i wan't the kx forks on my 99 kdx220R. Can anyone advise on the most trouble free conversion, what year kx forks should i be looking for & are the 125/250 the same?
Any advice would be very helpful as iv'e read so much on the forum regarding other year kdx but very little on a 99 model?

'95 to '06 KDX chassis' are all the same so any conversion you have read about for any of those would apply to your bike as well. KX125/250 are the same other than springs. You want forks that are '96 or newer.

The KX 500 forks are the closest to direct fit you will find. If you can get a complete wheel, Forks, Triples. This will make it a few hour project rather than a month long ordeal. If you keep the KDX wheel check out RB Designs.com .

2005 and newer KX250 forks are different than KX125 forks. Otherwise, they are similar besides springs on most years most consider for the "FRONT END" (not fork) swap

'99 to '03 KX forks (125 or 250) are great if you are just getting forks, and not the whole front end. RB designs has this swap down to a science. This is the route I went, and I never looked back.

BTW, don't forget about the '96-'98 forks. I'm really happy with my '96 KX125 forks. Plus, I didn't have to modify the steering stops like guys with the larger 48mm forks to keep them from hitting my fuel tank..

SS109, are you saying that on your 1990 KDX200 with the 1996 KX125 forks, they don't hit the tank at all? Are you using a stock upper triple clamp?

That is correct. Stock KX triples top and bottom and a factory fuel tank. I have about 1/16" clearance on both sides.

Thanks guys, that info is really helpful & just what i was looking for! For what its worth i think i will go for the total front end conversion rather than just the forks. Thanks again & happy riding.

Good luck and don't be afraid to do a lot of research on stem swapping.

SS109, thanks for the info. I have a 1994 KDX200 and it has a Pro Taper brand upper clamp that barely hits the tank.

you may want to consider keeping the KDX caliper
(i did on my swap and it works perfect with the 99 KX 125 rotor)

the KDX caliper is quite a bit larger then the KX
