Swap '04 KX250f forks

Post by KDXjack »

So, I've been reading about the swaps and decided to pull the trigger on a set of 2004 KX250f forks for my 2005 KDX200. The forks came with the upper and lover triples, and stem. I'm going to have RB work on the stem swap.

Should I replace the stem bearings at this time?

Any pitfalls I should watch out for?

Any advice is appreciated.

The old lower bearing will be removed during the stem swap anyway, and usually the lower bearing on the donor bike is different than the lower bearing on the KDX. Bearing kits for the KDX are only about $30.

yeah, i thought the bearings were still good too but Ron (who obviously knows this stuff better then me) spotted some flaws so i had to buy some online and have them shipped to Ron

delayed the project by almost a week

Swap '04 KX250f forks

I'm going to call Ron tomorrow about the axle. Hopefully he can help me out. Anybody else have the 2004 forks?

If I need a kx wheel and axle, I will lose the kdx odometer as I understand it. But I will still be able to use the kdx caliper?

I don't know if these are open cartridge.

So, apparently Ron doesn't do the axle for this year. I found a '04 wheel and axle on ebay.
What bearings to you guys prefer? OEM, Pivot Works, All Balls, or ?

Got all my parts:
KXF Forks with triples
New bearings and races
kxf250 front wheel
Kxf 250 axle and spacers
New wheel bearings and seals

I'm going to tear it down and get the triples over to Ron after this weekends ride. Wish me luck!

Swap '04 KX250f forks

So, I would be done with this except people on eBay don't seem to know how to label their parts correctly. First I purchased a axle that was suppose to be an '04 and turned out to be an '03 axle. So, I purchased another.

Second, I purchased a wheel that was promised to come off a '04 but it still didn't work with my correct axle and spacers. So, after much research I have come to the conclusion that the wheel is actually a '06. The '06 wheel uses the same axle as the '04 but the spacers are all different.

I have the '06 spacers(left/right) on order and should have them by Monday so that I can get this thing back together, correctly. The '04 center spacer is 7mm longer which I figured meant that the '06 hub is different in where the bearings seat.

I'm still trying to figure out how to mount the light. In the mean time I'm just going to put a number plate on so that I can go ride. RB Designs did my stem swap, new bearing and spacer; that part went together beautifully.

If you are using the stock KDX headlight then you can just go get some UFO or simular universal headlight straps. I ended up using the stock KDX upper mounts swapped from side to side and the rubber straps on the bottom. Works good.

rbates9, I don't know how I could use the mounts on top because the bolts on the upper triple come in from the back. What year forks are you running?

Yeah, that won't work then. My forks are 00's. You could still use the rubber straps in all four holes. They fit right in the stock holes on the light perfect.
