rear shock question

Post by scheckaet »

Here is the deal, my rear shocks on the hybrid suuuucks.
I've already had a reputable suspension shop revalve and respring the fork (really made a hell of a difference :supz:)
I have a 4.9 spring at this point and they recommend going 4.8 or even 4.6 for where I ride but I really can't afford doing the rear now. (spring is 110 bux and the revalve is 200)
So here is my question for the suspension gurus:
my main complain about it is the braking bump and accelerating bumps: they beat me to death to the point I have to really hang on for dear life :?
The wheel seems to be bouncing up and down and not track at all, get a lot of wheel spin (I'm convinced that's why I destroyed a brand new michelin S12 in 2 rides  )
It seems ok on jumps, i don't bottom out anywhere, so I think the low speed compression and rebound is ok.

My shock is apart for now since I blew the seal on the last ride and I was thinking about trying something to make it more rideable. (riding on a blown shock is like having a pogo stick for a shock  )

Anyway here is my shim stack:

nut
thick washer
20.95
22.95
23.95
21.95 x 2
23.98
22.93
23.98
25.95
20.95
23.95
25.95
27.95
29.98
33.95 x 2
22.88
33.95 x 4
valve (race tech gold valve)
37.95 x 10
25.89
37.95 x2
22.95
37.95
33.95
29.95
27.95
25.95
23.95
17.95

Can anyone help me identify what does what and tell me what part of the circuit is the high speed damping?
I was thinking about removing some shims affecting that stack and also use a bit less psi in the shock, instead of the 170 I usually run I'd try 140 or 150.

thx

wilf

edit:
my reasoning behind the lower N2 psi is it would allow the oil to flow faster/earlier opening the high speed circuit since the resistance against the bladder would be less.
I think i'd need to open up the HS rebound to compensate for the lower psi since it won't have much strength to push back the oil.

I'm guessing this would impact the low speed damping too but hopefully would be manageable by increasing the compression (on full soft now)
What do you all think?

PS: if you know of a good website that explains how everything works I'd really appreciate it if you could post the link :prayer: . Just trying to make sense with my limited knowledge makes my head spin

try asking at thumpertalk - lots of info and knowledge over there. GDI70 helped me out with my fork.

thx heckler.
the more I look at my whacked out stack the less I can make sense of it.
The suspension guy that worked on my fork said the original stack was really weird too so I wouldn't be surprised if this was the same for the shock.

If I understand the way it works, seems the top is the rebound and bottom compression. (well duhhh) and the tapered part is the high speed comp/rebound.

I'm really tempted to get rid of these weird double crossover stack and go to a simple tapered stack. just by re-assembling the shim in order...
While i'm there I'm also thinking about transferring some of the bigger shims (both on rebound and comp) on the other side of the cross over.
I can't think of any spot where I ride where I bottom out, so I think i could use a softer stack any way.

you'll get better answers from GDI70 over on TT than from me. I took apart my first fork when I put up that thread, and have never opened a shock (yet). I see you've got your thread already started, and he's helping out.
